Release SB1272 From Suspense
SB 1272, The Overturn Citizens United Act, is currently sitting in the California Senate Appropriations Committee "suspense" file. While this may be ordinary procedure for ordinary expenditure bills, this is no ordinary bill.
Indeed, the whole point of the measure is to give the citizens of California a chance for the first time to speak out against the corruption of our national constitution by not just the Citizens United case, but by now the McCutcheon case as well. And that is why the entire CA legislature must be given a chance to decide whether to put it on the ballot.
Apparently the argument is being made in that putting this measure on the ballot would cost an additional $250,000 - $500,000, and that CA cannot afford it.
Leaving aside the fact that this number is likely a gross over estimate, presuming that someone needs 10 pages to argue this thing in the printed voter guide, . . . and leaving aside the fact this amount is a still a relative pittance, at most 2 cents for each CA voter, . . . the cost of not standing up against the flood of money swamping our elections is the loss of our very democracy itself.
This decision is too important to be made unilaterally by one or two members of the CA Senate Appropriations Committee. It is too important even for the entire committee to presume to decide this question on the merits for the rest of the legislature. But at a minimum the CA Senate Appropriations Committee must have a public recorded vote.
